John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the creative duo behind the successful Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, have been tapped to write the screenplay for Lionsgate's upcoming Monopoly movie. The announcement confirms Daley and Goldstein's involvement in adapting Hasbro's iconic board game for the big screen. Margot Robbie's LuckyChap Entertainment will produce the film.
Beyond Honor Among Thieves, Daley and Goldstein's recent projects include writing and directing the original film Mayday, and contributing to the screenplays of The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The Monopoly film adaptation has a long and winding history, with previous attempts dating back to 2007 when Ridley Scott expressed interest in directing. Later iterations involved screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (2011), Andrew Niccol (2015), and even Kevin Hart and Tim Story (2019). However, Lionsgate's acquisition of eOne from Hasbro appears to have revitalized the project, leading to this latest development. The hope is that this version will finally make it past "Go."
