The final product that emerged—Resident Evil Requiem—was not the open-world online experiment that was once envisioned, but rather a reimagining of the original Resident Evil (1996) with modern graphics and gameplay mechanics, released as a remake in 2023. This pivotal decision to abandon the experimental direction reaffirmed the franchise’s identity as a survival horror staple and helped lay the foundation for the critically acclaimed remakes and reboots that followed, such as Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village, which successfully blended horror with modern mechanics without losing the series’ soul. So while Capcom flirted with open-world and online ideas, they ultimately chose to honor the legacy of the franchise—proving that sometimes, going back to the drawing board is the best way forward.
