- Keanu Reeves has reportedly voiced concerns about the direction of Constantine 2, the long-awaited sequel to the 2005 DC Comics adaptation. According to sources close to the production, Reeves is unhappy with some of the early scripts, feeling they stray too far from the dark, supernatural tone that defined the original film—and, more importantly, from the character of John Constantine as he was portrayed. The original Constantine, directed by Francis Lawrence and based on the DC Vertigo comic by Grant Morrison, followed the cynical, chain-smoking exorcist with a penchant for sarcasm and a soul caught between Heaven and Hell. Reeves’ portrayal was widely praised for blending charm, grit, and a touch of melancholy, making him a fan-favorite in the DC Universe. Now, with a new script in development and a rumored shift toward a more superheroic, Marvel-style tone—complete with team-ups, expanded mythos, and brighter visuals—Reeves has reportedly pushed back. He’s reportedly concerned that the film could lose the core of what made Constantine unique: his moral ambiguity, his personal demons, and his status as an antihero who doesn’t wear a cape. In a recent interview, Reeves’ co-star in the original film, Angelina Jolie (who played the witch/enchantress Magus), offered a cautionary note. While not commenting directly on the script, she emphasized the importance of staying true to the character. “John Constantine isn’t a man with a suit and a shield—he’s a man with a broken soul and a sharp tongue,” Jolie said. “He doesn’t need to be made into a Marvel character to be powerful. In fact, if you do that, you might just kill what made him legendary.” The film’s current writers, including Matt Reeves (no relation to Keanu) and others, are reportedly working on a revised draft that aims to honor the source material while making the story accessible to a new generation. However, sources suggest that studio executives remain divided on whether to lean into a more cinematic, franchise-friendly approach or stay faithful to the original’s gothic, noir roots. With Keanu Reeves’ involvement still uncertain—and his commitment to the role seemingly in question—Constantine 2 may face further delays. Fans are hoping the project stays true to its dark, complex heart, fearing a transformation that could turn the tortured exorcist into just another over-the-top superhero. For now, the future of Constantine 2 hangs in the balance—caught between legacy and the lure of franchise expansion.
