Epic Games and Telefónica Partner to Pre-install Epic Games Store on Android Devices

Epic Games has forged a new partnership with telecommunications giant Telefónica, resulting in the pre-installation of the Epic Games Store (EGS) on Android devices sold through Telefónica's network. This means users of brands like O2 (UK), Movistar, and Vivo will find the EGS readily available as a default app.

This seemingly small detail represents a significant strategic move by Epic Games in expanding their mobile presence. Telefónica's global reach, encompassing dozens of countries, ensures widespread availability of the EGS. This long-term partnership will see the EGS installed alongside other app stores on Telefónica-branded devices.

The impact is substantial: the EGS will now compete directly with Google Play as a default app store option. Given Epic's aggressive efforts to distinguish themselves in the market, this could be a game-changer.

Convenience: A Key Factor

A major hurdle for alternative app stores is user convenience. Many casual users remain unaware of, or unconcerned with, options beyond pre-installed apps. Epic's deal directly addresses this, making the EGS a default option for users in key markets including Spain, the UK, Germany, Latin America, and beyond. This provides a considerable advantage.

This collaboration marks just the beginning of the partnership. Epic and Telefónica previously collaborated on a digital experience featuring the O2 Arena within Fortnite in 2021.

For Epic, embroiled in a protracted legal battle with Apple and Google, this partnership represents a significant strategic maneuver, potentially yielding substantial long-term benefits for both Epic and mobile users.
