Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nearing Release, Says Writer

Author : Andrew May 25,2025

Are you eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars movie? Rest assured, the acclaimed director of Deadpool & Wolverine is still at the helm, and we've got a reassuring update from the project’s writer, Jonathan Tropper. "I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant about the future film. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

Currently, Levy's Star Wars project remains shrouded in mystery. The only confirmed detail is that it is set to take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has shed some light on its timeline, stating in a February interview with Deadline, "That’s also in the future. It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions the film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.

In the same interview, Kennedy confirmed that Levy’s film will follow the release of 2026’s The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Additionally, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this eagerly anticipated project.

Tropper’s optimistic words suggest that things are progressing well for Levy’s film, despite the fact that fans might have to wait until at least the last quarter of 2026, or possibly even 2027, to see it.

Disney hasn’t released a Star Wars film since the polarizing Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. During this hiatus, several planned films were canceled, including projects from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. In November, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was removed from Disney's release calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars feature films: a Dave Filoni-directed New Republic film set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The latter is set to feature Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker. The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. However, Rey remains a key focus for Disney, with reports indicating her appearance in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.

Disney's Star Wars slate is expansive, with X-Men producer Simon Kinberg set to write a new trilogy that will not continue the Skywalker Saga, contrary to initial reports.

The next Star Wars content to hit your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode premiere, promising an exciting continuation of the series.
