Despite its swift demise weeks after launch, Sony's ill-fated hero shooter, Concord, continues to receive updates on Steam. This unexpected development has sparked considerable speculation among gamers.

Concord's Post-Launch Steam Updates Fuel Speculation

Free-to-Play Resurgence or Gameplay Overhaul? Theories Abound

Remember Concord? The hero shooter that fizzled faster than a damp squib? While officially offline since September 6th, its Steam page shows a steady stream of updates since September 29th, as tracked by SteamDB. These updates, originating from accounts like "pmtest," "sonyqae," and "sonyqae_shipping," suggest potential backend improvements and quality assurance efforts.

Concord's August launch, priced at $40, was a significant misstep in a market dominated by free-to-play giants like Overwatch, Valorant, and Apex Legends. Its short lifespan and overwhelmingly negative reception led to a rapid withdrawal and refunds for players.

The ongoing updates, however, have ignited a wave of speculation. Following the game's shutdown announcement, former Firewalk Studios Game Director, Ryan Ellis, hinted at exploring options to better connect with players. Many believe these updates foreshadow a potential relaunch, possibly as a free-to-play title to address the pricing criticism.

Given Sony's substantial investment (reportedly up to $400 million), attempts to salvage the project are not surprising. The updates might indicate a significant reworking of the game, addressing past criticisms like lackluster characters and uninspired gameplay.

While Sony remains silent, the possibility of a revamped Concord with improved mechanics, wider appeal, or a revised monetization strategy remains open. Even a free-to-play model would face a challenging climb in a saturated market.

For now, Concord remains unavailable, and its future hangs in the balance. Only time will reveal if these updates herald a successful resurrection or simply mark the lingering echoes of a costly failure.
