The long-awaited return of Suikoden! After over a decade of absence, the upcoming HD remaster of the first two games aims to reignite the franchise's popularity and pave the path for future installments.
Suikoden Remaster: A Revival of a Classic JRPG
A New Generation Awaits
The Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster seeks to revitalize this beloved JRPG series. Director Tatsuya Ogushi and Lead Planner Takahiro Sakiyama expressed their hopes in a recent Famitsu interview (translated via Google) that the remaster will introduce a new generation of players to Suikoden while rekindling the passion of longtime fans. Ogushi, deeply connected to the series, paid tribute to the late Yoshitaka Murayama, the series creator, expressing his belief that Murayama would have wanted to be involved. Sakiyama, director of Suikoden V, emphasized his desire to reintroduce Suikoden to a wider audience, hoping for continued expansion of the IP.
A Closer Look at the Remaster
Based on the 2006 Japan-exclusive PlayStation Portable collection, Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster brings enhanced visuals and gameplay to modern platforms. Konami promises improved HD background illustrations, creating more immersive environments. While the original pixel art sprites are polished, their core design remains intact. A new Gallery feature offers access to music, cutscenes, and an event viewer, all readily available from the title screen.
The remaster rectifies issues from the PSP release. Suikoden 2's infamous, previously shortened Luca Blight cutscene is restored to its original length. Furthermore, some dialogue has been updated to meet modern sensibilities; for instance, Richmond's smoking habit has been removed to reflect Japanese smoking regulations.
Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster launches March 6, 2025, on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Prepare for a journey back to a beloved world!
