The Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, while expanding its appeal to younger and female players, will remain centered on the experiences of middle-aged men. This commitment to its core identity was recently reaffirmed by the developers.

Maintaining the "Middle-Aged Dude" Vibe

Despite a significant increase in female and younger players, director Ryosuke Horii stated in an interview with AUTOMATON that the series won't alter its core themes to cater to this broader audience. The focus will remain on the relatable struggles and everyday life of middle-aged men, exemplified by protagonist Ichiban Kasuga's quirks and relatable anxieties. Horii and lead planner Hirotaka Chiba believe this authenticity is key to the series' unique appeal.

This sentiment echoes a 2016 interview with series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi, who, while acknowledging the growing female fanbase (approximately 20% at the time), confirmed the series' primary target audience remains male. He emphasized a cautious approach to avoid compromising the series' core identity.

Concerns Regarding Female Representation

However, the series' focus on male protagonists and perspectives has drawn criticism. Many fans have voiced concerns about the portrayal of female characters, citing frequent relegation to supporting roles and the prevalence of sexist tropes. The limited number of significant female characters and instances of objectification have been highlighted as particular points of contention.

Even in recent installments, this imbalance is noticeable. While acknowledging the issue with a degree of humor, Chiba points to scenarios in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth where female characters' conversations are interrupted and steered towards male-dominated topics as an example of this ongoing dynamic.

Progress and Future Outlook

Despite these criticisms, the series has demonstrably evolved, showing progress towards more inclusive representation. Reviews like Game8's 92/100 score for Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth praise the game's balance of fan service and forward momentum. While the developers' commitment to their core vision is clear, the future of female representation within the series remains a topic of ongoing discussion.
