Jack Black Builds Mansion on Private Minecraft Movie Server

Author : Michael May 12,2025

The recently released *A Minecraft Movie* has brought the beloved game to life in a spectacular way, thanks in part to the filmmakers' innovative approach to production. The team behind the film created a private Minecraft server accessible to the entire cast and crew, allowing them to immerse themselves in the game's world and enhance the authenticity of the movie. Jack Black, who plays the iconic character Steve, took his role to heart by constructing a massive mansion atop the highest mountain within the server, complete with an art gallery in the basement.

Having Minecraft readily available proved invaluable for the filmmakers. Producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson shared with IGN that the server fostered an environment reminiscent of an indie game studio, brimming with creativity and collaborative ideas. While not all suggestions could be implemented due to the project's momentum, the server allowed the team to add unique touches to the film, ensuring it remained true to the essence of Minecraft.

Director Jared Hess praised Jack Black's dedication to the game, noting his "super-weirdly method" approach. Black spent time in his trailer harvesting resources like lapis lazuli and constantly building, which led to a continuous flow of fresh ideas for the movie. Black himself humorously remarked on his commitment, saying, "I had an Xbox in my trailer and I did play because *an actor prepares.*" He aimed to prove his Minecraft prowess by building an impressive structure on the server, which included a stairway and a mansion that he hoped would cement his status as a "real Minecrafter."

Ólafsson confirmed that Black's mansion is still standing on the server and even extended its availability for a year. During a recent visit, he encountered two security guards from the set still active in the server, showcasing the lasting impact of this creative tool on the film's production.

While it's uncertain if audiences will get to see Jack Black's 'Real Minecrafter' Mansion in the film, the behind-the-scenes stories add a fascinating layer to the movie's creation. The filmmakers' use of Minecraft not only brought the game to life on the big screen but also highlighted the joy and collaboration that goes into making a movie.
