Analyst Predicts Strong, but Not Leading, Switch 2 US Sales in 2025
Gaming analyst Mat Piscatella forecasts US sales of approximately 4.3 million Nintendo Switch 2 units in 2025, contingent on a first-half launch. This projection represents roughly one-third of the total US console market (excluding handheld PCs). While this is a significant number – mirroring the original Switch's strong initial performance – Piscatella anticipates the PlayStation 5 will retain its top spot in US console sales.
The prediction, shared on Bluesky (@matpiscatella.bsky.social), acknowledges the considerable buzz surrounding the Switch 2. However, Piscatella cautions that sales success hinges on several factors: timely release, hardware quality, and a competitive game lineup. He also anticipates potential supply chain challenges, mirroring the launch issues experienced by both the original Switch and the PS5. Whether Nintendo has adequately prepared to mitigate these challenges remains to be seen.
The projected 4.3 million units sold would be a substantial achievement. For context, the original Switch sold 4.8 million units in the US by the end of 2017, exceeding initial projections and necessitating air-freighting of additional consoles to meet demand. A similar scenario for the Switch 2 is a possibility, depending on Nintendo's manufacturing capacity.
The competitive landscape also plays a crucial role. The highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6 in 2025 is likely to boost PS5 sales significantly. Ultimately, the Switch 2's success will depend on its ability to deliver a compelling hardware experience and a strong launch title roster to compete effectively against established players.
