A Terminally Ill Gamer's Wish: An Early Look at Borderlands 4
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has pledged to fulfill the heartfelt request of Caleb McAlpine, a 37-year-old Borderlands fan battling terminal cancer, to experience the upcoming Borderlands 4 ahead of its official launch.
Caleb's Wish
Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in August, Caleb, a devoted Borderlands enthusiast, took to Reddit to express his desire to play Borderlands 4 before his passing. His touching plea resonated deeply within the gaming community. He stated, "I'm a diehard Borderlands fan, and I don't know if I'll be around for Borderlands 4. Is there any way to contact Gearbox about playing early?"
Gearbox's Response
His message reached Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, who responded on Twitter (now X), promising to explore all avenues to make Caleb's wish a reality. Pitchford tweeted his gratitude for the outpouring of support and assured Caleb that they would "do whatever we can to make something happen," subsequently adding that they've been in email contact.
A Race Against Time
Borderlands 4, unveiled at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024, is slated for a 2025 release. However, Caleb's prognosis, as detailed on his GoFundMe page, presents a limited timeframe. Doctors estimate he has 7 to 12 months to live, possibly extending to two years with successful chemotherapy. Despite this, Caleb maintains an optimistic outlook, drawing strength from his faith.
Community Support
Caleb's GoFundMe campaign, aiming to raise $9,000 for medical expenses, has already garnered over $6,210 from 128 generous donors.
Gearbox's History of Compassion
This isn't the first instance of Gearbox demonstrating empathy towards ill fans. In 2019, Trevor Eastman, another Borderlands fan battling cancer, received an early copy of Borderlands 3 before his passing in October of that year. In his memory, Gearbox named a legendary weapon, the Trevonator, after him. Furthermore, in 2011, they honored the memory of Michael Mamaril, incorporating a tribute and an NPC named after him in Borderlands 2.
Looking Ahead
While Borderlands 4's release remains some time away, Gearbox's commitment to fulfilling Caleb's wish, coupled with their past actions, provides a heartwarming testament to their dedication to their community. As Pitchford stated in a press release, "We at Gearbox have massive ambitions for Borderlands 4 and are committed to making everything we love about Borderlands better than ever before." The specifics remain under wraps, but fans can eagerly await further announcements.
