Chrono Trigger Celebrates 30 Years with Upcoming Projects and a Special Concert
Square Enix has announced the 30th anniversary of the beloved RPG, Chrono Trigger. To mark this milestone, they've promised a series of projects launching throughout the year. While details remain scarce, the announcement hints at possibilities beyond a simple re-release, fueling speculation among fans.
For decades, fans have hoped for a proper remake or modern console release of this classic JRPG. Despite its iconic status and numerous ports to PC and mobile platforms (including a PS1 port in 1999), a definitive modern version has remained elusive. While Square Enix's history of revisiting its classics offers hope, the only confirmed anniversary event is a special concert showcasing the game's legendary soundtrack.
This YouTube concert streams on March 14th at 7:00 p.m. PT and continues into the early hours of the next morning.
Chrono Trigger, a time-traveling RPG, boasts an all-star development team including Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy), Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest), and Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball). Originally released in 1995 for the Super Famicom and SNES, the game follows Crono and his companions as they traverse diverse eras, from prehistoric jungles to a dystopian future. Players recruit allies, reshape history, and ultimately confront one of gaming's most memorable final bosses.
This 30th anniversary is a significant event. While a remake or console port isn't yet confirmed, Square Enix's announcement leaves the possibility open. Stay tuned to Chrono Trigger's X page for updates on upcoming projects. In the meantime, check out this list of the best JRPGs to play on iOS!
