The critically acclaimed Shōgun, recipient of an impressive 18 Emmy Awards and 4 Golden Globes, is officially returning for a second season – with production plans now in motion. Cosmo Jarvis, who portrays the English pilot John Blackthorne, has confirmed his return for Season 2 while also joining the creative team as co-executive producer, according to FX's official announcement.
Series lead Hiroyuki Sanada – who committed to Season 2 last May following the show's surprise renewal – has been elevated to executive producer after serving as producer during the initial season. Production for Season 2 will commence in January 2026, returning to Vancouver where the first season was filmed.
A New Chapter Begins
FX describes the upcoming season as "a completely original continuation" of the story that began with James Clavell's novel adaptation. The network outlined how the seasons connect:
"Season 1 followed Lord Yoshii Toranaga's (Sanada) struggle for survival against his political rivals in the Council of Regents. The arrival of shipwrecked English navigator John Blackthorne (Jarvis) and his strategic insights ultimately shifted the balance of power in Toranaga's favor during a pivotal civil war.
Season 2 will pick up a decade later, continuing the historical saga of these two men from vastly different worlds whose destinies remain profoundly interconnected."
Fans can hopefully anticipate new episodes by late 2026 – though official release dates remain unconfirmed for this prestige drama's highly anticipated return.
