Cyberpunk 2077 enthusiasts were once teased with the prospect of a thrilling expansion set in space, specifically on the Moon, but this ambitious project was ultimately shelved. Blogger and dataminer SirMZK has unearthed leaks and files from the game's code, offering a glimpse into CD Projekt RED's cosmic vision for this expansion.
Within the game's files, there are references to lunar surface maps, structured zones such as the Exterior Movie Set and Drug Lab, and even a rover model. The Moon was planned to be expansive, possibly encompassing a quarter of Night City's size, and designed as an open-world environment. This would have significantly expanded the gameplay, transporting players far from the neon-lit streets they're familiar with into a new frontier.
One of the highlights of the proposed DLC was the Crystal Palace, an elite space station. Although it didn't make it into the final game, players can briefly see the Crystal Palace in one of the endings when V looks out of a spaceship window. Moreover, the files uncovered a prototype for a zero-gravity bar connected to a cut quest called "201," which was linked to the Arasaka storyline.
Fans remain hopeful that elements of these ideas might be reintroduced in CD Projekt RED's upcoming project, Orion, which aims to further expand the Cyberpunk universe. However, there has been no official word from the studio on whether these concepts will be reused.
While the Moon DLC remains a tantalizing "what if" for now, the details that have surfaced illustrate what could have been an exciting leap for Cyberpunk 2077 into uncharted territory, seamlessly blending space exploration with the game's distinctive cyberpunk style.
