Corinne Busche, the game director behind Dragon Age: The Veilguard, is set to depart from EA-owned BioWare in the coming weeks, according to Eurogamer. Busche assumed the role of game director in February 2022 and led the project until its launch in October of the previous year. IGN has reached out to EA for comment on this development.
Since its release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been under scrutiny regarding its commercial performance. Despite the questions surrounding its success, Eurogamer reports that Busche's departure will not lead to further changes within the studio. Busche joined BioWare in 2019 following her time at Maxis, where she contributed to The Sims projects. IGN's article, 'How BioWare Finally Got Dragon Age to the Finish Line After a Tumultuous Decade,' highlighted the game's challenging development journey, which included a significant overhaul from a multiplayer concept to a full-fledged single-player RPG. Busche played a crucial role in steering the game to completion during its final stages.
Eurogamer notes that Busche's exit is unrelated to Dragon Age: The Veilguard's market performance. EA has not disclosed whether the game's sales and revenue met or exceeded expectations, though the company is slated to announce its Q3 2025 financial results on February 4.
Moving forward, BioWare has no plans to develop DLC for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Instead, the studio is shifting its focus to Mass Effect 5, a project that has been teased but not yet fully revealed.
In a related development, BioWare underwent layoffs in August 2023, affecting around 50 employees, including veteran narrative designer Mary Kirby, who had been with the studio since the beginning of the Dragon Age series. These layoffs were part of a broader restructuring at EA, which resulted in the company being divided into sports and non-sports divisions. Amidst these changes, rumors circulated about a potential acquisition of BioWare, and Star Wars: The Old Republic was transitioned to a third-party operation, allowing BioWare to concentrate on Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
The rollercoaster continued with Dragon Age: The Veilguard's reveal in 2024. The initial reveal trailer received negative feedback, prompting BioWare to quickly release an early gameplay teaser to reassure fans. The game's name change from Dreadwolf to The Veilguard also faced criticism, but subsequent impressions were generally positive.
With Busche's departure and the studio's shift in focus, Dragon Age fans are now left pondering the future of the series and whether BioWare will have the opportunity to develop another Dragon Age sequel.
