Ex-Rockstar Dev: No More GTA 6 Trailers, Hype Sufficient

Author : Isabella May 25,2025

As anticipation for more news on Grand Theft Auto 6 continues following the release of Trailer 1 in December 2023, a former Rockstar developer has suggested that no further trailers should be released until the game's launch.

Rockstar Games unveiled GTA 6 Trailer 1 to an unprecedented audience, but has since kept silent, leaving fans eager for more glimpses of the game. The prolonged wait has sparked a flurry of conspiracy theories among the community, with some fans analyzing minute details such as the number of holes in Lucia's cell door and bullet holes in a car from the trailer. Perhaps the most notable theory involved observing the moon's phases, which correctly predicted the announcement date of Trailer 1 but was later debunked as a clue for the release date of Trailer 2.

The question on everyone's mind is when GTA 6 Trailer 2 will be released. Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, hinted that fans might have to wait until much closer to the game's projected fall 2025 release date for another look. However, Obbe Vermeij, a former technical director at Rockstar who contributed to the series up until GTA 4, expressed a different view on social media. Vermeij stated that if it were his decision, he would not release any additional trailers, arguing that the existing hype around GTA 6 is sufficient and that maintaining an element of surprise would amplify the impact of the game's launch.

In response to a fan's suggestion that Rockstar might simply announce the release date without further trailers, Vermeij praised the idea as a bold move. Yet, given that the first trailer was labeled as "Trailer 1," the expectation is set for subsequent trailers to follow. Plans can shift, though, and Rockstar might prioritize finalizing the game over releasing a trailer that would be meticulously dissected by fans.

Vermeij also shared insights into Rockstar's decision-making process, recalling the delay of GTA 4 in 2007 and suggesting that a similar "decision day" for GTA 6 might occur close to the current release timeline. He hinted that clarity on any potential delay might not come until around Take-Two's August earnings report.

Amidst the speculation, Mike York, a former animator at Rockstar New England, commented on the company's strategy of fueling fan theories through silence. York believes Rockstar is intentionally withholding information to generate buzz and keep the community engaged, creating a sense of mystery and excitement without additional effort from the studio.

Zelnick's comments further indicate that if GTA 6 Trailer 2 is indeed planned, it might not be released until just before the game's launch in 2025, provided there are no delays. As fans continue to await further details, they can explore IGN's coverage on various related topics, including potential delays and the future of GTA Online.
