Best-selling author George R.R. Martin has signed on as producer for an unconventional animated retelling of Hercules' mythos, marking another creative detour from his unfinished A Song of Ice and Fire series.
A Mythological Reinvention
The project, titled A Dozen Tough Jobs, reimagines Hercules' legendary labors through the eyes of a Depression-era Mississippi farmer. While Martin oversees production, acclaimed author Joe R. Lansdale - known for his quirky horror-comedy Bubba Ho-Tep - will pen the screenplay.
"If anyone understands epic storytelling and franchise building, it's George R.R. Martin," remarked David Steward II of Lion Forge Entertainment. "This isn't merely another Greek myth adaptation - we're blending historical authenticity with mythological innovation."
The Never-Ending Winter
Fans hoping for updates on The Winds of Winter will find cold comfort in this announcement. The long-delayed sixth installment hasn't seen progress since Martin devoted much of 2024 to HBO's House of the Dragon and other television commitments.
The author recently dismissed speculation about imminent publication, bluntly stating on his blog: "The book isn't coming soon." This follows nearly fourteen years since A Dance with Dragons' 2011 release.
A Prolific Side Hustle
Despite his unfinished magnum opus, Martin maintains an active creative presence beyond Westeros:
- Consulting on multiple Game of Thrones spinoffs
- Contributing lore to FromSoftware's Elden Ring
- Developing historical fiction set in his fictional universe
- Now producing this radical Hercules reimagining
The 76-year-old author still intends to complete both The Winds of Winter and its sequel A Dream of Spring, though neither has a projected release window.
