Nintendo has provided an exciting glimpse into the future with a first look at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just ahead of the console's much-anticipated launch next month. A recent video from Nintendo's Today app showcases the official Switch 2 carry case, designed to hold up to six cartridges from both the original Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2. This confirms what we already knew: Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same size and shape as their predecessors, ensuring compatibility with a single cartridge slot on the new console.
One striking feature of the Switch 2 cartridges is their vibrant red color, a universal choice evident from the Mario Kart World cartridge displayed in the video. If you haven't downloaded the Nintendo Today app, you can still catch the reveal courtesy of OatmealDome on X/Twitter. The top of each cartridge now sports a Switch 2 logo, distinguishing it from the original Switch design.
The official Switch 2 carrying case not only has space for the console with the new Joy-Con 2 attached but also includes room for six cartridges and two Joy-Con 2 straps. While the size of the Switch 2 cartridges remains unchanged, they carry forward an unusual trait from their predecessors: a foul-tasting coating to prevent accidental ingestion.
Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta previously shared with GameSpot, "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption. We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out." This safety measure underscores Nintendo's commitment to user safety.
