Hyper Light Breaker, the highly anticipated sequel to the indie hit Hyper Light Drifter, significantly departs from its predecessor's formula. Trading its 2D pixel art for a stunning 3D world (without sacrificing visual appeal), it blends rogue-lite gameplay with extraction mechanics, and crucially, adds multiplayer.
Playing Hyper Light Breaker cooperatively with friends is a core feature, enhancing the experience and making challenges more manageable. This guide explains how to play with friends and how to use online matchmaking to join random public groups.
How To Play Hyper Light Breaker With Friends
To enjoy co-op multiplayer with friends, you'll need to create a private multiplayer room. After arriving at the Cursed Outpost, the game's hub, approach the counter to the left of your commander, Pherus Bit.
Press the Interact button (usually R1 or RB) to access the Multiplayer menu. Here, you can create or join teams and check invitations. To play with friends, select "Create Breaker Team."
In the following menu, enable "Password Required" and set a password. Once your private team is created, invite up to two friends using your platform's social features (PSN, Xbox, and Steam are supported). The game supports groups of three.
If your friends are already online, invitations will appear in the "Invitations" tab. Otherwise, they can join using the invitation link.
Your team might also appear in the "Join Breaker Team" menu, allowing friends to find and join directly. Once everyone has joined and the password is shared, you're ready to begin your co-op adventure.
Random Online Matchmaking In Hyper Light Breaker
If you're looking for multiplayer action without needing friends who own the game, you can join or create public groups. The process is the same as creating a private team, but omit the password. Alternatively, use matchmaking to join a random group.
In the Cursed Outpost's Multiplayer menu, select "Join Breaker Team," then scroll to the bottom and choose "Join Random Public Breaker Team."
The game will search for available public teams and place you in one if found. After a brief loading screen, you'll join the host's world.
To leave a multiplayer session, return to the counter in the Cursed Outpost, open the Multiplayer menu, and select the "Disconnect" option (which appears only when in a session). Alternatively, you can simply quit the game.
