Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con's Potential Mouse Functionality: Evidence and Speculation
Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer a novel functionality: operating as computer mice. While the widespread adoption of this feature by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller experimentation.
This intriguing possibility stems from Vietnamese customs data obtained by Famiboards user LiC, who previously uncovered information related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data, a source of numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024, recently revealed entries detailing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" – a term typically associated with the bottom of computer mice – intended "to stick to game console handles."
The data lists two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, which haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting potentially new, unreleased products. Both tapes are reportedly 90 x 90mm, large enough to cover the back of the new Joy-Cons, potentially requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a First for Handhelds
While unconventional, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented in the handheld gaming market. Lenovo's Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, transforming into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic housing to improve its functionality as a mouse.
The Legion GO also shares another rumored Switch 2 feature: magnetic rails for controller attachment. This similarity further fuels speculation about potential design parallels between the two devices.
