In Avowed's opening moments, the Envoy is tragically assassinated. Solving this murder mystery reveals Ygwulf, the killer. The choice: mercy or vengeance. Should you kill Ygwulf?
Understanding Ygwulf's Motives
After investigating with Kai and Marius in Paradis, you'll uncover Ygwulf's identity. A Paradisan Rebel, he opposes Aedyr's influence. As the Emperor's Envoy, the player is a prime target.
Ygwulf and his group are found in an underground hideout. Reaching him requires combat and platforming challenges; prepare accordingly. Documents within the dungeon reveal Ygwulf's remorse and misguided belief that the Gods commanded the assassination. Even without these documents, he expresses regret during your confrontation. He's apologetic but prepared to face the consequences.
The Consequences of Sparing or Surrendering Ygwulf
Surrendering Ygwulf to the Steel Garrote Inquisitor is the least favorable outcome. He faces Inquisitor Lödwyn's harsh judgment, implying a painful death. This yields fewer rewards than sparing him or killing him.
Sparing Ygwulf grants 625 Copper Skeyt and some Adra. While helpful, it's not substantial. However, his death is inevitable, regardless of your choice.
Why Killing Ygwulf is the Best Option
Given his predetermined death, attacking Ygwulf offers the best outcome. The ensuing boss fight provides valuable combat practice. More importantly, killing him yields superior loot.
Defeating Ygwulf grants currency, Adra, and the unique Blackwing armor. This armor boasts a significant +30% damage boost from stealth and a 25% movement speed increase while crouching, enhancing stealth capabilities.
Ygwulf's Impact on the Story (Spoiler Warning)
Despite being an early encounter, Ygwulf's fate subtly affects Avowed's ending. Post-game epilogues illustrate the consequences of your choices in Eora. Regardless of your efforts to bring peace to the Living Lands, Ygwulf's death radicalizes the Paradisan Rebellion, ensuring their continued violent resistance even after the credits roll.
