Three Kingdom Heroes brings top-level AI challenges to chess-like duels, coming soon

Author : Violet Jan 05,2025

Koei Tecmo's latest Three Kingdoms game, Three Kingdoms Heroes, blends chess and shogi mechanics for a unique mobile battle experience. Players command iconic Three Kingdoms figures, each with distinct abilities and strategies. However, the real highlight is the GARYU AI, a challenging adaptive system developed by HEROZ, the creators of the world-champion shogi AI, dlshogi.

The Three Kingdoms era, a rich tapestry of heroism and intrigue, provides a compelling backdrop. Three Kingdoms Heroes retains the series' signature art style and epic storytelling, making it an accessible entry point even for newcomers. The turn-based gameplay, inspired by shogi and chess, offers diverse tactical options.

Launching January 25th, the game's most innovative aspect is the GARYU AI. While AI boasts are common, HEROZ's pedigree—consistently outperforming human shogi grandmasters—is impressive. While the comparison to Deep Blue and its chess victories warrants caution, the prospect of a truly adaptive and challenging AI opponent is undeniably enticing, especially in a setting that celebrates strategic prowess.

yt The GARYU AI is a key selling point, promising a deeply engaging and challenging experience for players.
