Following its release late last year, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP has reportedly achieved significant sales success, surpassing 200,000 units sold as fans eagerly return to this classic action game. Despite initial technical issues and accusations of censorship, the remaster continues to attract players, demonstrating a strong demand for the title.
Developed originally by Grasshopper Manufacture, renowned for unique action games like the No More Heroes series, Lollipop Chainsaw is a hack-and-slash game where players control a cheerleader battling zombies with a chainsaw. The remaster, titled Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, was handled by Dragami Games, which introduced quality-of-life improvements and a substantial visual update.
Several months after its launch in September 2024, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP has reportedly sold over 200,000 copies across all available platforms, including current and last-gen systems, as well as PC. This milestone was recently announced by Dragami Games via a tweet, celebrating the game's sales success.
Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP Developers Celebrate The Game's Sales Success
The game's narrative follows Juliet Starling, a cheerleader at San Romero High School, who discovers her family's legacy as zombie hunters when her school is overrun by the undead. Players engage in intense combat against hordes of zombies and unique bosses using Juliet's signature chainsaw, reminiscent of gameplay found in titles like Bayonetta and other classic third-person action games.
The original Lollipop Chainsaw on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 saw even greater success, reportedly selling over a million units upon its 2012 release. Much of the game's appeal stemmed from the collaboration between iconic game designer Goichi Suda and James Gunn, the filmmaker behind Guardians of the Galaxy, who contributed to the game's story and writing.
Currently, there is no information on whether the sales success of Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP will lead to additional content or a sequel. However, the positive reception bodes well for remasters of niche games. Another title from Grasshopper Manufacture, Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered, has also been updated and released across all current platforms, bringing the action-horror game to modern audiences and hardware.
