MGS Timeline: How to Play Metal Gear Solid Games Chronologically

Author : Evelyn Apr 15,2025

The Metal Gear series, a legendary franchise crafted by Hideo Kojima and Konami, has delivered some of the most iconic moments in gaming history. From Snake's gripping elevator ride to the rainy cliffs of Shadow Moses in Metal Gear Solid to the emotional climax of the mentor-student battle in Snake Eater, the saga of Solid Snake and Big Boss has not only spanned multiple console generations but also pushed the boundaries of video game storytelling.

In 2015, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain appeared to mark the end of the series, coinciding with Hideo Kojima's departure from Konami. However, Konami has since revived the series with re-releases and remakes, including the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater slated for later this year. As new players dive into this world of espionage, conspiracy, and intense action, understanding the chronological order of the Metal Gear Solid series becomes essential for both newcomers and returning fans.

Excluding remakes, ports, or remasters, there are a total of 17 Metal Gear games. This includes 11 mainline entries, five on handheld devices, and one on mobile. However, not all of these games are part of the main canon. Titles like Metal Gear Survive, set in an apocalyptic zombie-infested world, fall outside the main storyline. Similarly, Metal Gear: Acid and Metal Gear: Acid 2 for the PSP, Metal Gear: Ghost Babel for the Game Boy Color, and Metal Gear Mobile and Snake's Revenge are considered non-canon, either creating alternate timelines or being officially deemed non-canonical by the community and Kojima.

This leaves us with 11 games within the main storyline, which form the true Metal Gear Saga. The saga spans from the 1960s to the late 2010s, and we'll guide you through each game in chronological order.

Which Metal Gear Should You Play First?

For those eager to experience the entire saga, we recommend starting with the 2023 Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1, which includes the best versions of Metal Gear Solid 1–3. For players who prefer a more modern entry point and have less tolerance for older games, starting with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a good choice.
