Minecraft's creator, Markus "Notch" Persson, hinted at a potential Minecraft 2 in a recent social media poll. The news sent ripples through the gaming community, generating significant excitement.
A Spiritual Successor in the Works?
Persson, on his X (formerly Twitter) account, revealed he's developing a game blending roguelike elements (like ADOM) with first-person dungeon crawler mechanics (similar to Eye of the Beholder). However, he also included an option for a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft in a poll. The Minecraft 2 option overwhelmingly won, securing over 81.5% of nearly 287,000 votes.
Subsequently, Persson confirmed his seriousness, stating he essentially announced Minecraft 2. He acknowledged the massive popularity of the original and expressed his enthusiasm for revisiting his creative passion. He emphasized that while he's open to either project, the strong fan preference for a Minecraft-like game is a significant factor.
It's important to note that Persson sold Mojang (Minecraft's developer) and the IP to Microsoft in 2014. Therefore, any new project must avoid direct IP infringement. Persson assures fans he respects Mojang and Microsoft's work and will proceed cautiously, avoiding any actions that could be seen as undermining their efforts.
Persson also voiced concerns about the inherent challenges of creating a spiritual successor, acknowledging the risks involved. Despite these concerns, the potential for significant financial success and strong fan demand are driving forces behind his consideration.
While awaiting this potential "sequel," fans can anticipate Minecraft-themed amusement parks opening in the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, along with the release of a live-action Minecraft movie later in 2025.
