The future of *The Last of Us* gaming series might have just been sealed, according to recent statements by Naughty Dog's leadership. Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog, was asked during a March 5, 2025 interview with Variety whether a third installment in the acclaimed franchise is on the horizon. His response? “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.”
This declaration casts doubt over any potential sequel beyond *The Last of Us Part II*, which many already viewed as having a conclusive narrative arc. While fans may still enjoy new content through HBO’s *The Last of Us* TV adaptation—season two is set to premiere April 13, 2025—the game series appears to be reaching its end.
Neil Druckmann’s Philosophy on Sequels
Druckmann has previously shared his mindset regarding sequels. In a conversation at the DICE Summit 2025 with IGN, he stated that he doesn't plan for multiple entries from the start. “I think you're jinxing yourself if you're starting to think about the sequel when you're working on the first game,” he explained. He added, “If there's a cool idea, I'm doing my best to get it into here.” This approach suggests that if a sequel were ever made, it wouldn’t be premeditated—it would need to organically arise from the creative process.
New Horizons: Naughty Dog’s New IP
With the possibility of no further *The Last of Us* games, Naughty Dog is diving headfirst into an entirely new universe. During The Game Awards 2024, the studio officially announced Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, a PlayStation 5-exclusive title teased with a cinematic trailer rich in sci-fi visuals. According to the official site, development started back in 2020, and the project promises to be Naughty Dog’s most ambitious storytelling endeavor yet.
The End of The Last of Us Online
Before *Intergalactic* took center stage, Naughty Dog had plans for a multiplayer spin-off titled *The Last of Us Online*. However, those ambitions were scrapped to allow the team to focus on single-player experiences. Former Sony Interactive Entertainment President Shuhei Yoshida revealed in a February 19, 2025 interview with Sacred Symbols+ that Bungie, creators of *Destiny*, advised Sony executives on the complexities of live-service games. As Yoshida recalled, Naughty Dog realized they couldn’t manage both *Intergalactic* and a live-service title simultaneously.
“The idea for The Last of Us Online came from Naughty Dog and they really wanted to make it,” Yoshida said. “But Bungie explained what it takes to make live-service games, and Naughty Dog realized, ‘Oops, we can't do that! If we do it, we can't make Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.’ So that was a lack of foresight.”
What’s Next For Fans?
While the studio shifts focus to new intellectual properties, long-time fans still have something to look forward to. *The Last of Us Part II Remastered* is scheduled to launch on PC on April 3, 2025, bringing enhanced features and performance improvements to the critically acclaimed title.
