Netflix has officially announced the closure of its interactive fiction games under the Netflix Stories banner, marking the end of a brief but intriguing experiment in narrative gaming. This decision might come as a surprise to many, considering the solid player base these games had garnered. So, what led to the cancellation of Netflix Stories? Let's dive in for the complete story!
The news was first reported by Variety and is part of a larger strategic shift within Netflix Games. The company is now pivoting its focus towards developing mobile titles that include party games, children's games, mainstream releases, and other interactive experiences that can also be enjoyed on TV screens.
Boss Fight Entertainment, the creative studio behind the Netflix Stories series, will continue its collaboration with Netflix on other projects, including the much-anticipated Squid Game: Unleashed.
Netflix Stories Gets Cancelled: What Does This Mean?
Despite facing some criticism, Netflix Stories consistently ranked among the top-played games within the Netflix Games ecosystem. According to recent data, it holds the fourth spot in the Netflix Games top 10 carousel, which is based on playtime rather than download numbers.
Looking ahead, the final interactive title in the Netflix Stories lineup will be Love Is Blind: NYC. Once this game completes its rollout, no new titles will be developed under the Netflix Stories banner. This announcement follows shortly after the Netflix Stories app began teasing its next game, The Love Contract, originally slated for an April 8th release.
The Love Contract was unique as it wasn't based on any existing Netflix IP. It promised an original romance story revolving around an actress navigating the complexities of a Hollywood star, a billionaire, fame, scandal, and fake dating. Unfortunately, this game has been scrapped.
Although the development of new Netflix Stories games has ceased, the existing titles will remain available for players to enjoy. Fans can still dive into games like Love Is Blind, Emily in Paris, Money Heist, Love Is Blind: Winter’s Kiss, Perfect Match, Sex Education, Selling Sunset, Sweet Magnolias, Virgin River, and The Perfect Couple. However, planned sequels such as Outer Banks and Ginny & Georgia have also been cancelled.
That's the full scoop on Netflix Stories! If you're a fan of Netflix shows and want to explore these interactive experiences, you can find the games on the Google Play Store.
