Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Double Dose of Ninja Action
The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a thrilling surprise: the announcement of Ninja Gaiden 4 and the remake, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Team Ninja, celebrating its 30th anniversary, declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja."
Ninja Gaiden 4: A New Era Begins
Developed by the collaborative forces of Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 marks a significant return to the franchise after a 13-year hiatus. This direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3 promises the series' signature blend of brutal, rewarding gameplay. The partnership with Xbox is a natural progression, given their history of collaborations on franchises like Dead or Alive.
A New Protagonist Takes Center Stage
Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan, aiming to achieve Master Ninja status. Art Director Tomoko Nishii (PlatinumGames) describes Yakumo as a character designed to stand alongside Ryu Hayabusa, the series' iconic protagonist. Producer and Director Yuji Nakao (PlatinumGames) explains the decision to introduce a new hero: "We wanted a new hero to make the series more approachable for new players, while ensuring long-time fans enjoy the game. Ryu Hayabusa plays a significant role in the story, serving as a major challenge for Yakumo." Rest assured, Ryu Hayabusa remains a crucial part of the narrative and will be playable.
Revitalized Combat
Ninja Gaiden 4 retains the series' signature fast-paced, brutal combat. Yakumo's unique fighting style introduces the Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style, alongside the Raven Style. Director Masazaku Hirayama (Team Ninja) assures fans that both styles maintain the core Ninja Gaiden feel, while incorporating PlatinumGames' signature speed and dynamism. The game is currently 70-80% complete and in the polishing phase.
Fall 2025 Release
Ninja Gaiden 4 is slated for a Fall 2025 release on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title.
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Remastered Classic
Available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5 (and Xbox Game Pass), Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is a remake of the 2008 Xbox 360 classic. It features additional playable characters from Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, offering a modernized experience for both veterans and newcomers.
This double announcement promises a thrilling year for Ninja Gaiden fans. The combination of classic action and fresh innovation is sure to excite both longtime players and newcomers alike.
