Sony's Secret Los Angeles Studio: A New AAA Title in the Works

Sony Interactive Entertainment has quietly established a new, unannounced AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This marks their 20th first-party studio and adds to the already impressive roster of PlayStation developers. The studio's current project is a highly anticipated, original AAA IP for the PS5, described as "ground-breaking" in a recent job listing for a Project Senior Producer.

The news, initially revealed through a job posting, has ignited considerable speculation within the gaming community. Given the secretive nature of the project and the location, several theories regarding the studio's origins are circulating.

One prominent theory suggests the studio may house a spin-off team from Bungie. Following layoffs at Bungie in July 2024, 155 employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment, fueling speculation that a portion of this group is now forming the core of this new Los Angeles-based team, potentially working on Bungie's previously announced "Gummybears" incubation project.

Another compelling possibility points towards the team led by industry veteran Jason Blundell. Blundell, known for his work on Call of Duty: Black Ops, co-founded Deviation Games, which was developing a AAA PS5 title before its closure in March 2024. Following Deviation Games' dissolution, many of its employees joined PlayStation, with Blundell at the helm of this new initiative. Given the longer gestation period of Blundell's team compared to the potential Bungie offshoot, this seems a strong contender for the identity of Sony's newest studio. The project could potentially be a continuation or a reimagining of Deviation Games' previous, unreleased title.

Regardless of its precise origins, the existence of this new studio is exciting news for PlayStation fans. While an official announcement and details about the game remain elusive, the knowledge that another first-party PlayStation title is under development promises future thrills for gamers. It's likely to be several years before Sony reveals any concrete information, but the anticipation is already building.
