Pokémon Legends: Z-A E10+ Rating Sparks Fan Theories

Author : Zachary Mar 28,2025

We recently got an exciting glimpse of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the latest installment in Game Freak's Legends series, set to unfold in the vibrant Lumiose City from Pokémon X and Y. What's stirring up the fanbase even more is the game's surprising E10+ rating from the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB), attributed to 'Fantasy Violence.' This rating has sparked a whirlwind of speculation, ranging from serious to downright playful, among the Pokémon community.

Notably, the Nintendo Switch store page for Pokémon Legends: Z-A displays this E10+ rating, which stands out as an anomaly for the franchise. Traditionally, mainline Pokémon games have been rated 'E for Everyone.' This shift has fans buzzing with theories about what new elements Game Freak might introduce to justify the elevated rating.

The speculation ranges from humorous ideas like Pokémon engaging in extreme violence or incorporating gunplay, to more grounded theories. Some Reddit users have jokingly suggested scenarios like being ambushed by a gang of Scrafty in Lumiose's alleys. "Ohhhh boy, Game Freak is taking off the little kiddie gloves," commented Reddit user RynnHamHam. "This ain’t your kindergartener’s Pokémon game."

The character AZ, who has a significant and darker backstory in Pokémon X and Y, is set to return in Legends: Z-A. This has fueled speculation about exploring more mature themes related to the Kalos region's history. Other theories include increased use of mild language or introducing Game Center-style minigames, which might contribute to the E10+ rating.

My take on this is that the rating likely stems from the 'Fantasy Violence' noted by the ESRB. This aligns with other Pokémon games like Pokkén Tournament DX, which also received an E10+ rating for similar reasons. The real-time battle elements teased in Pokémon Legends: Z-A could be the cause, as the battles appear more direct and impactful than in previous entries.

As of now, Pokémon Legends: Z-A isn't listed on the ESRB website, so we're left to speculate until more details emerge. It's intriguing to ponder what Game Freak has planned for this game that warrants a higher age rating.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is scheduled to launch in late 2025 on the Nintendo Switch, and until then, the speculation and excitement will continue to grow.
