Pokémon TCG Launch Faces Scalping, Shortages, and Outages Again

Author : Skylar Apr 24,2025

The latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) set, Scarlet & Violet - Destined Rivals, was fully unveiled on March 24 and is set to launch on May 30, 2025. If you've been a collector for some time, the chaotic launch window might not come as a surprise, with reports of scalpers and store issues already affecting the new set.

Several factors make this set particularly sought-after. It marks the return of Trainer's Pokémon cards, a nostalgic archetype for fans who remember classics like Brock's Sandslash or Rocket's Mewtwo. These cards tie beloved Trainers into the Pokémon cards in unique and exciting ways. Additionally, Destined Rivals focuses on Team Rocket, the iconic villainous team from the first generation of Pokémon games. Much like the earlier Prismatic Evolutions set with its Eevee-lutions, Destined Rivals is poised to be a fan favorite.

When pre-orders went live, it was no surprise that frustration quickly ensued. Fans attempting to purchase the Elite Trainer Box (ETB), a popular themed box containing card packs and other accessories, found themselves unable to access the Pokémon Center website. Scalpers swiftly capitalized on the situation, listing pre-orders of the Pokémon Center-specific ETB on eBay for several hundred dollars, a stark contrast to its typical price of $54.99.

Joe Merrick of Serebii expressed his frustration with the situation, stating, "I truly hate this. The way almost all Pokemon TCG content has shifted to financial. The way that people just treat it as investment. The way people just want to flip it. It's disgusting. Shame on all involved." Unfortunately, this scenario is not uncommon; sets like Prismatic Evolutions and Blooming Waters 151 have faced similar issues with shortages and rapid sell-outs. The Pokémon Company has announced that more inventory of the Destined Rivals ETB will be available later in the year, according to a FAQ on PokéBeach.

Compounding the issue, some buyers have reported that their ETB orders are being cancelled. The high demand and popularity of the Pokémon TCG have unfortunately marred the hobby for many who simply wish to open packs and play the game. While Pokémon TCG Pocket offers a virtual alternative to mitigate physical scarcity, the frustration is understandable for those who prefer the tangible experience. A visit to your local store's card aisle will likely illustrate the difficulty of securing packs during these popular releases. Hopefully, solutions to these ongoing issues will emerge soon.
