Former Blue Archive Developers Cancel Project KV Amidst Plagiarism Accusations
Dynamis One, a studio founded by ex-Blue Archive developers, has pulled the plug on its upcoming visual novel, Project KV. The game, initially generating significant buzz, faced intense backlash due to its striking resemblance to its predecessor, Blue Archive.
The cancellation announcement, made via X (formerly Twitter) on September 9th, included an apology from Dynamis One for the controversy. The studio acknowledged the concerns regarding the similarities and emphasized its commitment to avoiding future conflicts. All Project KV materials are being removed from online platforms.
Project KV's initial promotional video, released August 18th, showcased a voiced story prologue. A second teaser, two weeks later, provided further glimpses into the characters and narrative. However, the project's abrupt cancellation followed swiftly after the second teaser. While disappointing for Dynamis One, the online reaction to the cancellation has been largely positive.
The "Red Archive" Controversy
The formation of Dynamis One in April 2024, led by former Blue Archive developer Park Byeong-Lim, initially raised eyebrows among Blue Archive fans. The subsequent unveiling of Project KV ignited a firestorm. Fans quickly pointed out numerous similarities, from aesthetics and music to the core concept: a city populated by weapon-wielding female students.
The presence of a "Master" character, echoing Blue Archive's "Sensei," and the use of halo-like adornments mirroring those in Blue Archive, fueled accusations of plagiarism. The halos, particularly, drew criticism, as they are significant narrative elements in Blue Archive.
The speculation that "KV" stood for "Kivotos" (Blue Archive's fictional city), leading to the nickname "Red Archive," further intensified the negative reception. While Blue Archive's general producer, Kim Yong-ha, indirectly addressed the controversy by sharing a clarifying post on X, the damage was done.
The overwhelming negative feedback ultimately led to Project KV's demise. While some may lament the lost potential, many view the cancellation as a justified response to the alleged plagiarism. Whether Dynamis One will learn from this experience and develop a more original vision for future projects remains to be seen.
