Shawn Levy, the director behind Deadpool & Wolverine, may finally be setting course for a galaxy far, far away—and he’s bringing Ryan Gosling along for the journey.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levy’s upcoming Star Wars film has entered negotiations with Ryan Gosling for a leading role in the project. Levy has been developing this Star Wars movie since 2022, and by early 2024, a script was already in progress. Once again, Levy is teaming up with Jonathan Tropper, who previously penned This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, both directed by Levy.
As expected, plot details surrounding the film remain tightly under wraps. No official information has surfaced regarding Gosling’s potential character or the specific era of Star Wars lore the film will explore. What is known, however, is that the story will not connect to the Skywalker Saga.
Additionally, THR reports that this Star Wars project is intended as a standalone film, rather than the start of a new trilogy.

Gosling’s involvement appears to have accelerated the film’s momentum. Originally, Levy was set to direct a boy band comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. However, if Gosling officially signs on, production on this Star Wars project will take priority, becoming Levy’s next feature—with filming expected to begin this fall.
At present, the Star Wars franchise is in a period of transition. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Disney+ launched its latest series, Skeleton Crew, which recently aired its final episode of the season. On the big screen, Dave Filoni’s The Mandalorian and Grogu film wrapped production in December and is slated for a May 22, 2026 theatrical release. Meanwhile, a new trilogy centered around Daisy Ridley’s Rey from the sequel trilogy is also in development.
No official release date has been announced for Levy’s Star Wars film, pending confirmation of the project moving forward in 2025. For a full look at what’s coming next in the Star Wars universe, check out our 2025 preview.
