It looks like Buffy might be slaying again, this time on Hulu.
According to Variety, a reboot of the iconic series Buffy the Vampire Slayer is nearing fruition at Hulu, with Sarah Michelle Gellar in discussions to return as the legendary vampire hunter. While the reboot will introduce a new Slayer as its protagonist, Gellar is expected to appear as a recurring character, bringing back the charm and ferocity of Buffy Summers.
Adding to the excitement, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao, renowned for her work on Nomadland and Eternals, is reportedly in talks to direct and executive produce the series. The writing and showrunning duties will be handled by Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman. Notably, original series creator Joss Whedon will not be involved in this reboot. Whedon, who helmed both the original series and the movie it was based on, faced allegations of fostering a toxic work environment during the production of Buffy and its spinoff, Angel.
Details on the plot are scarce at this point, but it's clear that the series will focus on a new Slayer while possibly featuring Gellar reprising her iconic role.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen by destiny to combat demons, vampires, and other supernatural beings. Buffy was supported by her loyal friends Willow Rosenberg and Xander Harris, as well as her Watcher, Rupert Giles.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer originally aired from 1997 to 2003, spanning seven seasons. Its universe was further expanded with the spinoff Angel and a series of canonical comic books that continued the story.
