The Asus ROG Ally Z1 Extreme is a Windows 11 gaming handheld featuring AMD's Zen 4-based Z1 Extreme processor, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD. Its 7-inch display delivers crisp 1080p resolution at 120Hz refresh rate. Unlike the Linux-based Steam Deck, this Windows 11 device provides greater flexibility for installing multiple game clients beyond Steam's ecosystem, though Steam OS offers simpler navigation.
In our official review, Robert Anderson noted: "The Asus ROG Ally delivers as the portable Xbox Game Pass machine fans desired. Despite some battery life limitations and absence of Steam Deck-style touchpads, its brilliant 1080p display and powerful hardware make it an undeniable contender against the Steam Deck at this attractive price point."
Premium Handheld Gaming PCs Come at Significant Premium
While newer alternatives surpass the ROG Ally, they command substantially higher prices. Asus' upgraded ROG Ally X features the same Z1 Extreme APU but adds enhanced battery life, more RAM/storage, and dual USB-C ports—though its $800 price tag may not justify the $300 premium for most users.
The recently launched Lenovo Legion Go S Steam Edition stands out with doubled memory/storage and a larger 9-inch display, becoming the first SteamOS alternative to Valve's Deck. Though technically superior to the aging Steam Deck, its $830 price represents a $330 jump from the ROG Ally's current deal.
