Sony Removes PS3 Classics Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 from PS5 and PS4 in Major PS Plus Overhaul

Author : Simon May 17,2025

Next month, PlayStation Plus subscribers will see a significant change to their library, with 22 games set to be removed on May 20, 2025. Notable among these are Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, and the last playable versions of first-party titles Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2.

PlayStation Plus is an essential online gaming service for PlayStation users, offering a range of benefits including free monthly games, limited-time trials, online multiplayer, and exclusive discounts for members. Additionally, it provides a catalog of hundreds of current and classic games accessible to Extra and Premium members.

As reported by Push Square, the departure of these 22 games from the PlayStation Plus library includes two high-profile first-party Sony PS3 titles, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, which are set to leave the PS Plus Premium library. This move is particularly significant because these games are no longer available for purchase on the PS Store, making the PS Plus Premium streaming service the final avenue for players to experience them on modern consoles—unless they own the games and a functioning PS3.

The Resistance series, developed by Insomniac Games, is known for its alternate history first-person shooter gameplay. Following their success with the Ratchet and Clank series, Insomniac released three Resistance titles for the PS3 before shifting focus to other projects like Marvel’s Spider-Man and new Ratchet and Clank games. The removal of Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 comes less than a year after they were added to the library at the end of 2024.

While it's rare for Sony to remove first-party games from PlayStation Plus, precedents exist, such as the unexpected removal of both Horizon gamesHorizon Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West—in August 2024. Unlike the Horizon titles, which remained available for purchase, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 will be completely unavailable on modern consoles after their departure from PS Plus.

Interestingly, Resistance 3 and Resistance: Retribution will continue to be available on the service. Additionally, the more recent first-party PS4 game, InFamous: Second Son, is also being removed from the PS Plus lineup.

Insomniac's Resistance series has been dormant for some time, and recent comments from Insomniac founder and outgoing president Ted Price indicate there was significant interest in developing Resistance 4, though the project never received approval. Similar to Guerrilla's Killzone series, the Resistance franchise appears to have been put on hold.
