In a recent interview with Wccftech, the developers at Eclipse Glow Games revealed the inspiration behind Tides of Annihilation's Arthurian setting and London backdrop. Read on to discover the game's core concept and future plans.
Tides of Annihilation: A Western-Focused Adventure
Arthurian Myths and Knights: The Core Concept
At Gamescom 2024, Eclipse Glow Games discussed Tides of Annihilation's design, mechanics, and potential for an anthology series with Wccftech. The China-based studio explained their choice of a Western setting, stating that Tencent, their financial backers, had different expectations for this project compared to Black Myth: Wukong. While Wukong targeted the Chinese market, Tides of Annihilation was designed with a Western audience in mind, leading to the selection of Arthurian legends as its central theme. The game's producer conceived the core concept around knights, eventually settling on King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.
Set in a post-apocalyptic London ravaged by an Outworld invasion, the game follows Gwendolyn, seemingly the last human survivor. While grounded in a modern setting, Tides of Annihilation incorporates fantasy elements heavily inspired by Arthurian myths.
Devil May Cry-Inspired Combat and Over 30 Bosses
The gameplay immediately evokes the classic Devil May Cry combat style, a similarity the developers readily acknowledge. They describe the combat as "definitely more like Devil May Cry," but with adjustable difficulty settings to broaden accessibility. Simplified controls cater to action game fans of all skill levels.
Players can customize their combat style using four distinct weapons and over ten different Knights as companions. Gwendolyn’s ability to command these legendary Knights is central to the gameplay, as she traverses ruined London to uncover the truth behind the invasion. With over 30 bosses boasting unique abilities, players are promised challenging and engaging encounters. "Players will have to prepare for very challenging boss fights," the developers emphasized.
An Anthology in the Making?
Eclipse Glow Games also hinted at the possibility of expanding the franchise into an anthology, featuring different settings, mythologies, and protagonists. The core concept of the Outworld invasion would remain, serving as a unifying element across future titles. The success of Tides of Annihilation will be crucial in determining the development of this potential anthology.
Currently in beta, Tides of Annihilation is slated for a tentative 2026 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Players will join Gwendolyn as she confronts destiny and fights to save not only London, but the intertwined fantasy realm of Avalon.
