Marvel Rivals has found itself at the center of a heated controversy following the removal of over 500 mods within a single month. The situation escalated when Nexus Mods, a popular platform for game modifications, decided to remove mods that replaced Captain America's head with images of Joe Biden and Donald Trump. This decision stirred strong reactions among users.
The owner of Nexus Mods, known by the pseudonym TheDarkOne, took to a private Reddit discussion to explain the platform's actions. He stressed that the mods featuring both Trump and Biden were taken down simultaneously to prevent any claims of political bias.
"We removed the Biden mod on the same day as the Trump mod to avoid bias. But for some reason, YouTube bloggers are silent about it," TheDarkOne stated. Despite this balanced approach, the removal of the mods led to a significant backlash.
Following the removal, TheDarkOne reported receiving a wave of threats and insults. "Today we write death threats, call us pedophiles and all sorts of insults just because someone decided to stir up this topic," he added, highlighting the intensity of the reaction.
This incident isn't the first time Nexus Mods has faced controversy over mod removals. In 2022, the platform made headlines when it removed a mod for Spider-Man Remastered that swapped rainbow flags with American flags. At the time, the site's owners made it clear that they supported inclusivity and would not hesitate to remove content that went against their stance on diversity.
"We're not going to waste our time on people who think this is cause for uproar," TheDarkOne concluded, standing firm on Nexus Mods' policies despite the ongoing controversy.
