These five cards form what's known as a "cycle," each belonging to a different color of Magic and sharing common design elements. They are all affordable, common-rarity creatures that not only connect to one of Tarkir's three-color clans but also feature an ability to convert mana into a color aligned with that clan.

Wizards of the Coast's Senior Game Designer, Adam Prosak, explains the importance of mana fixing in three-color limited environments: "We wanted to ensure that players could easily access mana fixing across various deck types, so we introduced numerous designs to address this. These creatures allow you to develop your board while simultaneously fixing your mana, unlike other solutions like tapped lands, which can put you at a disadvantage."

Senior Worldbuilding Designer Lauren Bond highlights how these common cards not only serve a mechanical purpose but also enrich the set's lore. She notes, "These cards reflect the distinct identities of the clans. From the action-driven Jeskai monks to the Temur's mystical Whispers, the protective and vengeful Naga of the Sultai, the versatile Mardu military, and the Abzan clerics restoring their lost kin trees, each card tells a story."

While some recent Magic sets have been critiqued for overusing thematic gimmicks, Tarkir: Dragonstorm stands out for its straightforward approach to revisiting Tarkir. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges the importance of community feedback to Wizards of the Coast. He states, "Our vision for Tarkir was set long before sets like Murders at Karlov Manor. We aimed to blend Dragons and Clans in a fresh way, with the iconic Dragonstorms at the heart of our design. From the start, Lauren and I felt the pressure to authentically expand this beloved plane."

Tarkir: Dragonstorm is available for preorder now, with a release date set for April 11 in both physical and digital formats. In-store prerelease events will begin on April 4. For a deeper dive, read our full interview with Wizards of the Coast’s Adam Prosak, Lauren Bond, and Forrest Schehl.
