Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatible Only with GameCube Classics, Nintendo Confirms

Author : Leo Apr 12,2025

The excitement is building as the Nintendo GameCube is set to make its way to the Nintendo Switch Online service, coinciding with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. Alongside this, a classic GameCube controller is on the horizon, promising to enhance the nostalgic gaming experience. However, a closer look at the fine print reveals that the new GameCube controller for the Switch 2 might be exclusively designed for playing GameCube games.

In the UK version of the Switch 2 GameCube controller trailer, a statement clarifies that "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics." This suggests that the controller's functionality may be limited to GameCube titles available on the Switch 2 Online Expansion Pack, and may not extend to other games on the Switch 2.

Yet, as pointed out by VGC, there's a precedent where similar disclaimers on other Nintendo controllers haven't strictly limited their use. Retro enthusiasts have often found ways to make these controllers work with a broader range of games. Notably, this disclaimer doesn't appear in the Nintendo of America version of the trailer, adding a layer of uncertainty.

Despite the potential limitations, the classic GameCube controller's design, with its ample buttons, seems well-suited for many common gameplay inputs on the Switch 2. This could be Nintendo setting clear expectations or aiming to prevent confusion among users who might attempt unconventional uses, like substituting the controller for a mouse.

For those less interested in the new GameCube controller, there's good news: the GameCube Controller adapter, a familiar accessory from the Wii U era, will be compatible with the Switch 2 via its USB port. This offers existing adapter owners continued utility with their investment.

The Best Nintendo Switch Online GameCube Games

As the classic GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2 prepares for its launch alongside the new console, eager fans await pre-order details, which have been delayed due to U.S. tariffs causing some uncertainty.

This update to the Nintendo Switch Online library is a significant one, granting subscribers access to a range of iconic titles from the early 2000s. At launch this summer, players can look forward to diving into games like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2. The library is set to grow over time, with future additions teased to include Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and more.
