"The Last of Us Season 2: Abby's Physique Explained by Neil Druckmann"

In an insightful discussion with Entertainment Weekly, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, the masterminds behind HBO's adaptation of "The Last of Us," shed light on the transformation of Abby's character for Season 2. Druckmann, who also heads Naughty Dog, emphasized that the choice to cast Kaitlyn Dever as Abby without the need for her to bulk up stems from the show's different narrative priorities compared to the video game.

Druckmann explained, "In the game, the distinct mechanics for Ellie and Abby were crucial. Ellie was designed to feel smaller and more agile, while Abby's gameplay was more akin to Joel's—strong and brute-like. However, in our adaptation, the focus shifts more towards drama and character development rather than constant violent action. This allows us to explore Abby's character in a new light, one where her physical strength is less emphasized but her emotional journey is deeply explored."

Craig Mazin added, "We see this as an opportunity to portray Abby as someone who might be physically more vulnerable than her video game counterpart, yet possesses an even stronger spirit. We're interested in exploring where her strength comes from and how it manifests in different ways throughout the series."

This shift in focus is part of HBO's broader plan to extend the narrative of "The Last of Us Part 2" beyond a single season. While Season 1 successfully adapted the entire first game, Season 2 will cover just part of the sequel's story, ending with a "natural breakpoint" after seven episodes. Although a third season isn't officially greenlit yet, the groundwork laid in Season 2 hints at more to come.

The character of Abby has sparked significant controversy and toxicity among some fans, leading to real-world consequences. Naughty Dog employees, including Druckmann and actress Laura Bailey, have faced harassment and threats due to Abby's actions in the game. The situation escalated to the point where HBO took additional security measures for Kaitlyn Dever during the filming of Season 2.

Isabel Merced, who plays Dina in Season 2, commented on the situation, saying, "It's bizarre to see such strong reactions to a fictional character. Abby isn't real, yet some people's hatred towards her has crossed dangerous lines."
