Introducing the "Digital Revolution of Devarattam" app, a pioneering project aimed at preserving and promoting the vibrant Tamil Nadu folk dance known as Devarattam. This app is a heartfelt dedication to the legends of Devarattam, honoring the remarkable contributions of Mr. M Kumararaman, a retired teacher and Kalaimamani awardee, Mr. M Kannan Kumar, another distinguished Kalaimani recipient, and Mr. K Nellai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti, who was awarded the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar. Their dedication to the art form has been instrumental, and this app seeks to spread their legacy and the essence of Devarattam to a broader audience.
Devarattam, an ancient dance traditionally performed by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community, is characterized by its intricate steps. The dance consists of 32 basic steps, with an additional 40 alternative steps, making a total range of 32 to 72 steps. Dancers showcase their skill by holding a kerchief in each hand and wearing Salangai (ankle bells) on each leg, all while rhythmically dancing to the beats of the Deva Thunthumi, a traditional musical instrument integral to the performance.
Through this app, my goal is to not only celebrate Devarattam but also to pay homage to my guru, Mr. E Rajakamulu, and the beloved legends who have kept this dance form alive. The app serves as a comprehensive platform to explore the art of Devarattam and learn about its distinguished awardees, ensuring that this rich cultural heritage continues to thrive in the digital age.
