The Emmy nominations were announced yesterday, sparking widespread debate about which shows and performers received deserved recognition. Andor creator Tony Gilroy shared his thoughts on notable snubs from his Disney+ series.
"Several outstanding performances deserved recognition," Gilroy told Deadline, specifically mentioning Diego Luna and Genevieve O'Reilly. "There are easily a dozen performances that merited nominations."
Gilroy emphasized how Luna and O'Reilly's performances serve as the foundation of the series, bringing the scripted character arcs to life in ways that will cement their legacy regardless of awards.
"These aren't just great individual moments," he explained about the overlooked performances. "They're masterful, sustained character studies developed across 24 episodes. The true victory is that these performances will be celebrated and analyzed for years to come. I'm absolutely certain of that."
Andor received 14 Emmy nominations this year, marking the third-highest nomination count for any Star Wars series. The Mandalorian's first and second seasons hold the top spots with 24 and 15 nominations respectively.
Luna stars as protagonist Cassian Andor, while O'Reilly reprises her role as Mon Mothma - a character she first portrayed in 2005's Revenge of the Sith (though her scenes were cut). She later returned for Rogue One (2016), Ahsoka (2023), and voiced the character in Star Wars Rebels (2017).
Andor premiered on Disney+ in September 2022. The second and final season will conclude the series in late April 2025 after nearly three years in production.
