Bob Gale, the co-creator of the iconic science fiction franchise "Back to the Future," has a stern message for fans eagerly awaiting the return of the beloved series: "F**k you." In a candid interview with Yahoo, the writer and producer of all three "Back to the Future" films, who worked alongside Robert Zemeckis, firmly stated that there are no plans for a canonical continuation of the franchise.
Gale expressed his frustration with the constant inquiries about a potential "Back to the Future 4" during a backstage chat at the Saturn Awards. "People always say, ‘When are you going to do Back to the Future 4," he recounted, "And we say, ‘F**k you.'" This sentiment comes at a time when reboots and sequels, such as "The Matrix Resurrections" and "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," have been met with lukewarm to negative reception, highlighting the challenges of revisiting beloved classics.
The original "Back to the Future" film, released in 1985, follows high school student Marty McFly as he is accidentally sent back in time by the eccentric scientist Doc Brown. While the first movie became a landmark in sci-fi cinema, its sequels, released in 1989 and 1990, did not achieve the same level of acclaim.
Despite the over three-decade hiatus from new films, the "Back to the Future" franchise continues to thrive in other forms. Its legacy and influence remain strong, and the series has been adapted into a Broadway musical. Gale also revealed plans for a stage production on Royal Caribbean Cruises and mentioned his collaboration with Michael J. Fox, the actor who portrayed Marty McFly, on a forthcoming book about Fox's experiences.
