Fallout Developers Express Interest in a New Game, But Creative Freedom is Key
Several Fallout developers, including Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer, have expressed enthusiasm about contributing to a new Fallout title. However, a crucial condition has been consistently emphasized: the opportunity to explore fresh creative avenues.
The Need for Novelty
In a recent YouTube Q&A, Sawyer stated his willingness to helm another Fallout game, but only if provided with significant creative leeway. He highlighted the importance of defining project boundaries and the freedom to pursue innovative ideas. Without such freedom, the project's appeal diminishes significantly. He emphasized that the core draw for any developer is the chance to explore uncharted territory.
This sentiment is echoed by Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, who expressed interest in a Fallout: New Vegas remaster last year. In an interview with The Gamer, Cain clarified that his participation hinges on the project offering something genuinely new and different. He underscored that the allure of past projects stemmed from the opportunity to innovate. Simply creating another Fallout game without a novel approach wouldn't be compelling.
Obsidian's Perspective
Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart also voiced his desire to work on another Fallout game, given the chance. However, in a January 2023 interview with Game Pressure, he confirmed that no such project was currently underway. Obsidian's current commitments to Avowed, Grounded, and Outer Worlds 2 keep their development schedule full. While he expressed a personal hope to contribute to another Fallout game before retirement, the timing remains uncertain.
