Recent reports from video game market research firm Niko Partners suggest a mobile Final Fantasy XIV game in development by Square Enix and Tencent for the Chinese market. This article explores the details of this potential collaboration and its implications.
Square Enix and Tencent Teaming Up for FFXIV Mobile?
Confirmation Still Pending
Niko Partners' latest report lists 15 games approved by China's National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) for release within the country. Among these is a mobile version of Square Enix's popular MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV, with Tencent reportedly handling development. Other notable titles on the list include mobile and PC versions of Rainbow Six, along with two Marvel-based games (Marvel Snap and Marvel Rivals), and a mobile adaptation of Dynasty Warriors 8.
While rumors of a Tencent-developed FFXIV mobile game circulated last month, neither Tencent nor Square Enix have officially confirmed the project.
According to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad's August 3rd X (formerly Twitter) post, the FFXIV mobile game is anticipated to be a standalone MMORPG, distinct from the PC version. However, Ahmad emphasized that this information is based primarily on industry speculation and lacks official verification.
Given Tencent's significant presence in the mobile gaming market, this partnership aligns with Square Enix's stated strategy of expanding its flagship titles, such as Final Fantasy, to multiple platforms. Square Enix announced this multiplatform approach earlier in May, highlighting their commitment to aggressive cross-platform development.
