The modder known as 'Dark Space' has halted all work on his ambitious project to recreate the Grand Theft Auto 6 map within Grand Theft Auto 5 following a takedown notice from Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar Games. Dark Space had created a free-to-download mod based on leaked coordinate data and official trailer shots of GTA 6, which garnered significant attention from fans eager for any glimpse of the upcoming game set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S this fall.
The situation escalated when Take-Two issued a copyright removal request, resulting in a strike on Dark Space's YouTube channel. In response, Dark Space preemptively removed all download links to his mod and addressed the situation in a video, suggesting that the accuracy of his map recreation might have been too close to the mark for comfort.
In an interview with IGN, Dark Space expressed a philosophical acceptance of the takedown, citing past actions by Take-Two against similar fan projects. He acknowledged the potential for his mod to spoil the surprise of GTA 6's map, empathizing with Take-Two's position. Consequently, Dark Space has decided to abandon the project entirely and shift focus to other content, wary of further legal repercussions.
This incident has raised concerns about the future of other fan-driven projects, such as the GTA 6 community mapping effort, which might also face scrutiny from Take-Two. The company has a history of targeting fan projects that it perceives as conflicting with its business interests, including the 'GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition' mod and the 'Liberty City preservation project.'
A former Rockstar developer, Obbe Vermeij, defended Take-Two's actions, emphasizing that the company is protecting its commercial interests. He highlighted that while fan mods like the 'GTA3 for Dreamcast' project are generally allowed to continue, those that directly compete with official releases, such as the 'Definitive Edition' or potential remasters, are at risk of being taken down.
As fans await the release of GTA 6, IGN continues to provide comprehensive coverage, including insights from former Rockstar developers on potential delays, the future of GTA Online, and technical speculations about the performance of GTA 6 on the rumored PS5 Pro.
