Konami Unveils Mobile Game: Suikoden STAR LEAP

Exciting news for fans of the iconic RPG series: Suikoden is making a comeback with Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG developed by Konami in collaboration with MYTHRIL. Set to be released on Android and iOS platforms, this free-to-play game is expected to launch later this year, although an exact release date has yet to be announced.

For those unfamiliar, Suikoden has been captivating gamers since its debut in 1995. Created by Yoshitaka Murayama and developed and published by Konami, the series draws inspiration from the classic Chinese novel, Water Margin. Known as Suikoden in Japan, the franchise is renowned for its rich narrative filled with political intrigue, the mystical True Runes, and the legendary 108 Stars of Destiny. With 11 entries, including spin-offs, the last installment was released in 2012. Now, instead of a direct sequel or a full revival, fans are getting Suikoden STAR LEAP, a mobile game.

What’s in Store?

Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh cast of characters while maintaining the series' tradition of assembling 108 heroes. The game retains the classic Suikoden aesthetic with its pixel art style, as you can see in the teaser trailer below.

The storyline centers around the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes that have shaped the world. The protagonist, Hou, the son of a village chief, experiences a pivotal moment after his first successful hunt. However, tragedy strikes when the village is attacked, setting Hou on a quest to restore peace alongside his companions: Hisui, his servant with a mysterious emotional suppression; Shirin, his childhood friend driven by a strong sense of justice; and Shapur, a former general turned butler.

While the announcement of Suikoden STAR LEAP has stirred excitement, it has also sparked some debate within the community. Long-time fans have been eagerly awaiting a proper continuation of the series, and the introduction of a gacha-based mobile game has left some feeling uncertain about the direction Konami is taking.

We'll have a clearer picture once Suikoden STAR LEAP is released. In the meantime, keep an eye on the official website for the latest updates.
