Nintendo is prepared to combat Switch 2 launch shortages and scalpers, stating, "We are making preparations." Following its recent financial report, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa addressed concerns about a repeat of the original Switch's 2017 launch shortages. He assured Nikkei, as translated by VGC, that Nintendo will implement comprehensive strategies based on past experiences to mitigate scalping and supply issues.
These preparations likely involve significantly increasing Switch 2 production. Last year, Nintendo emphasized sufficient manufacturing to meet demand as the primary defense against scalpers. The original Switch's limited initial supply fueled inflated resale prices. However, Furukawa confirmed a different approach for the Switch successor, reiterating the commitment to ample production to counter resale practices. He also mentioned exploring additional measures within legal and regulatory frameworks, tailored to regional contexts. Component shortages, which hampered Switch production in previous years, are no longer anticipated to significantly impact Switch 2 manufacturing.
A Switch 2 Direct is scheduled for April 2nd, promising further details. Hands-on events will also be held globally.
Furukawa also addressed declining Switch sales, attributing the decrease to factors beyond consumer anticipation for the Switch 2, stating that the impact of delayed purchases is minimal and that sales are still strong for an eighth-year console. Nintendo plans to continue supporting the original Switch as long as demand persists, with Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond slated for 2025 release.
