Bethesda has confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered does not feature official mod support, yet this hasn't deterred dedicated fans from releasing their own unofficial mods.
Just hours after Bethesda and Virtuos shadow-dropped the reimagined Oblivion for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, a handful of community mods surfaced on the popular website Nexus Mods. Although these mods mostly offer minor customization options, they demonstrate the unwavering dedication of the Elder Scrolls modding community.
At the time of this story's publication, an impressive 22 mods are available on the site. The first mod to be released allows PC players to personalize their desktop by replacing the default Oblivion Remastered shortcut with one of two images featuring the infamous Adoring Fan. Several mods also enable players to skip the introductory Bethesda and Virtuos logo screens. Additionally, mods such as one that adjusts the Wizard’s Fury spell and another that removes the compass are already beginning to enhance gameplay customization.
Despite Bethesda typically encouraging mod support in its games, the company announced that Oblivion Remastered lacks official mod support. This information was detailed in an FAQ section on their website, confirming that players must look elsewhere for mods.
Nexus Mods user GodschildGaming released their Iron Longsword damage mod to demonstrate that modding is still feasible for Oblivion Remastered. In the mod's description, they stated, “This is just to prove modding is possible. Bethesda says no mod support, I say false. It really is Unreal slapped on top of Oblivion, the data folder is nested in a lot more folders but same concept.”
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered launched today, 19 years after the original, for PC and consoles. As more players dive into the game in the coming weeks and months, the pool of mods is expected to grow, offering increasingly unique ways to tailor the experience. While we await more mods, you can read about why some players consider today's release more of a remake than a remaster, and explore Bethesda's reasoning behind the "Remastered" label.
